Contemporary Damask w Illustrator Brushes & Live Transformation - Craft Medallions & Repeat Patterns
My love for Damask patterns has been enduring. I first fell in love with it when an aunt wallpapered her bathroom with a deep red, flocked damask pattern. It was not until I was in trade school that I finally was able to find out how it was done. I had always wanted to create a Damask or medallion pattern myself, but I must admit, it took me awhile to wrap my head around how to do it.

Title Repeat Textural Backgrounds for Pattern Design Swatches in Photoshop
Hey there! Thanks for your interest in Repeat Textural Backgrounds for Pattern Design Swatches. A seamless pattern is an image that can be placed side-by-side with copies of itself. Ideally, there are no visible seams, so you can repeat this image and create a pattern that can go on infinitely to create unique backgrounds, text effects or brand elements. Often, we need a textured background, or a texture to overlay other objects. Most of the time we need a seamless tile so that it can repeat indefinitely. Tiled textures work well with repeating patterns. With a tiled texture, you can create a small image file, then make it repeat several times across the object. It is not necessarily just for use in pattern design. I personally make use of these in my illustrative work as well.

Illustrator has plenty of tools, panels, and commands that make our work much easier. Among them, however, there are several outstanding ones that I personally consider the most important features of this program. They include brushes, the Appearance panel, Effects, and, of course, transformation.
The Transform Effect in Adobe Illustrator lets you move, scale, flip, rotate and repeat the appearance of one or more selected objects, and all of this is editable in the Appearance Panel. Using transformation(s), you can create patterns with paths, brush strokes, text or even imported images, which I will explain in this class. Then you can edit the whole pattern by making adjustments to the original. You’ll be surprised by the power of this indispensable tool!

The Adobe Suite of graphic illustration programs is an indispensable tool for surface pattern designers to translate their vision into a striking design and a printable, repeating pattern. In the past, the designer had to work on the foundational tile and the overall pattern, simultaneously paying close attention to both. Yeesh! Changes to colors and shapes in the foundational tile had to be precisely reciprocated to each assemblage in the full pattern. A late change once meant starting from scratch. But not any more!
